Kim Soo-Min

Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study was conducted to examine the effects of application family-centered intervention, by acknowledging the families of disabled children as experts and maintaining mutually cooperative relation throughout the entire processes of treatment and rehabilitation, on gross motor and balance in children with cerebral palsy.

Methods : This study was executed with two group, pre-post test quasi-experimental study design. Among the 24 children with cerebral palsy as the subjects were allocated to the experimental and control group. Both groups were subjected to neuro-developmental treatment, with the experimental group performing family-centered intervention program for 40 minutes, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. Assessments were conducted before intervention, after 6 weeks and 12 weeks of intervention on gross motor function and performance, static and dynamic balance.

Results : Although there was significant difference in the gross motor function and performance after 12 weeks of intervention, the mean scores of the experimental group increased more after 12 weeks of intervention than those of the control group with significant difference between the groups. Although there was significant difference in the static and dynamic balance after 12 weeks of intervention, the mean values of the experimental group decreased more after 12 weeks of intervention than those of the control group with significant difference between the groups.

Conclusion : Therefore, these results suggest that on family-centered intervention on children with cerebral palsy can be provided as an beneficial and reliable clinical intervention program in development on gross motor and balance.
